E-Bikes FAQ
eBike Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about an electric bike, or already have one and want to get the most from it? Here’s our comprehensive FAQ—covering everything from rules and range to care, costs, and the confidence of buying from Triton Cycles. If you still have questions, our friendly team is always happy to help.
Who are eBikes for?
Everyone! From daily commuters and weekend explorers to those getting back into cycling, eBikes open up new possibilities. If you want to enjoy cycling with less strain, ride further, tackle hills more easily, or just arrive at your destination feeling fresh, an eBike could be your perfect companion.
What are the UK rules on eBikes (EAPC Regulations)?
- The motor is rated no higher than 250W
- Assistance cuts out at 15.5mph (25km/h)
- You must pedal for the motor to provide assistance
If your eBike meets these standards, it’s legal to ride on cycle paths, roads, and anywhere a regular bike is allowed. No licence, registration, or vehicle tax required. Riders must be at least 14 years old.
How far can I go on a single charge?
Typical eBike range is 30–70 miles, depending on battery size, terrain, rider weight, and assistance level. Gentle riding on eco mode can stretch range further, while hilly routes or “Turbo” mode will use more battery. Most bikes display real-time battery info so you always know how much power you have left.
How long does it take to charge the battery?
Charging from empty usually takes 3–4 hours, though quick chargers and smaller batteries can be faster. Most batteries are easily removable, so you can top up at home or work.
Are eBikes expensive to run?
Not at all—charging costs are minimal (pennies per full charge). Other running costs are much like a standard bike: replacing tyres, brake pads, and chains as they wear. Regular servicing will keep your eBike running smoothly and safely.
Can you post eBikes?
Yes! At Triton Cycles, we build, check, and update the software on every eBike before it leaves our workshop. Bikes delivered in our local area arrive fully assembled and “Ready to Ride” via our own van. Courier deliveries may require minimal assembly, but your eBike will always be set up by our expert mechanics.
Where can I ride my eBike?
If it meets EAPC rules, you can ride your eBike anywhere you’d take a normal bike: roads, cycle lanes, shared paths, parks, and bridleways (unless local by-laws restrict cycling). Off-road eMTBs are perfect for trails and forest paths too.
Are eBikes hard to use?
Not at all! If you can ride a bike, you can ride an eBike. The motor just adds a gentle boost as you pedal. Most bikes let you choose from several assistance levels using simple handlebar controls.
How do I look after my eBike and battery?
- Keep your eBike clean—avoid jet washing, especially around the motor and battery.
- Charge the battery regularly and store it in a cool, dry place.
- No need to fully drain before charging—modern batteries are happy with top-ups.
- Service your eBike like a standard bike, but have a specialist check the electrics and firmware regularly. We’re a Bosch, TQ, and Hyena-certified centre.
Can I ride an eBike in the rain?
Yes—eBikes are designed to be used in all weathers. Just don’t submerge any electrical parts or leave the bike standing in water for long periods.
What if there’s an issue with my eBike?
Don’t worry—eBikes are reliable and easy to maintain, and you can always ride home even if the battery runs flat. If you have a problem, our trained workshop team can diagnose and resolve issues, update firmware, and replace components as needed.
How do eBikes compare to cars or public transport for cost?
eBikes are much cheaper to run than a car—no fuel, tax, MOT, or insurance needed. Most commutes cost only pennies in electricity. You’ll also save on parking, congestion charges, and can often get your bike via Cycle to Work or finance.
